You can’t tell from the photo, but although it’s in a dry stacked mode, the upper layers of it are mortared in place, presumably because students will be sitting/climbing on it, inevitably.
Somewhat more problematic, from an artistic perspective, is that the flanks of the arch also have some incongruous rounded stones mortared onto them, each one with a Duke logo & the name of a donor. If I were the artist, I’d be pretty bummed about that.
